Pennsylvania landfill owner ordered to pay $9.2M for violating Clean Water Act

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – The owner of a local landfill was ordered to pay a $9.2 million civil penalty for violating the Clean Water Act over 400 times from July 2019 and April 2023.

Republic Services of Pennsylvania LLC., which operates Modern Landfill in York County, was sued in 2023 by the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Assocation.

The lawsuit alleged the landfill, located on Mount Pisgah Road in York, “discharged toxic-per and polyfluoroakyl substances,” also known as PFAS, into Kreutz Creek without a proper permit since at least June 2022…
