RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Since some of Virginia’s Interstate 95 corridor has little groundwater left to support major new industrial development, a new state report expects the region’s supply to decline further over the next five to 10 years.
In the report published in late July, the agency found that areas east of the I-95 corridor — including the counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, New Kent and Charles City — have little remaining groundwater capacity for major new industrial users. Under current conditions, DEQ projects that the region’s groundwater supply will decline over the next five to 10 years.
Western portions of the commonwealth’s Coastal Plain have the least available groundwater capacity, with some regions able to support fewer than 30,000 gallons per day in additional permitted withdrawals…
