The Cheatham County Commission officially decided on a name for the new county jail at their July 20 meeting, held in the Cheatham County Courthouse in Ashland City.
The county commission approved naming the new county jail after former county sheriff, the late Dorris Weakley, who served as Cheatham County sheriff for a total of 18 years, first from 1970-1972 and then from 1974-1990. He also served 20 years as a county magistrate.
After winning reelection in August 1990, Weakley died at age 68 from complications following a massive stroke in November 1990.
Weakley was a member of the Tennessee Sheriff’s Association, president of the Cheatham County Community Progress Association, and a charter member of the 23rd Judicial Drug Task Force. He is also remembered for establishing the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Scholarship Fund in 1986…
