NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Law enforcement agencies across Tennessee issued thousands of citations during this year’s Operation Southern Slow Down, which is a weeklong speed enforcement and public awareness campaign aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors.
The campaign, led by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, ran from July 13 through July 19 and focused on speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use, and other traffic violations.

According to the THSO, Tennessee has recorded 504 traffic fatalities so far this year, a nearly 10% decrease from the 565 deadly crashes reported during the same period last year.
“People think that it doesn’t happen to them; it doesn’t happen to their family; it doesn’t happen to people they know, until it does,” said Lori Bullard, interim deputy director of the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. “Then they realize this is not just a number.”…
