If you’re looking for a peaceful hike away from the crowds, Camillus Forest Unique Area deserves a spot on your New York bucket list. Located just outside Syracuse in Onondaga County, this 350-acre New York State Department of Environmental Conservation property offers an unexpected mix of towering old-growth forest, open meadows, scenic views, and easy hiking trails. While called a forest, it consists of an astonishing amount of meadow.
Unlike many wooded hiking destinations, Camillus Forest Unique Area combines dense forest with expansive grassy fields, creating beautiful contrasts throughout the hike. Whether you’re visiting for spring wildflowers, brilliant fall foliage, birdwatching, or simply a quiet walk through nature, this unique preserve offers a little something for everyone.
Hiking Trails
Camillus Forest Unique Area features nearly four miles of interconnected trails that wind through forests, open meadows, and gentle rolling hills. For the most part, the hiking is flat and easy, making it an enjoyable destination for hikers of all skill levels.
The one challenge we encountered was trail navigation. While the trails closest to the parking area were well marked with map kiosks, the trails deeper into the preserve became much more difficult to follow. Several trail intersections lacked clear signage, and multiple trails shared the same color markers while being distinguished only by different route numbers.
