El Caprichoso, the family-run stand that has anchored the city’s late-night food scene since the 1990s, just landed on a national list of the best hot dogs in the country, putting one of the Valley’s favorite street foods in the national spotlight.
According to USA TODAY, El Caprichoso’s Sonoran dog – wrapped in bacon and piled high with beans, tomatoes, crema, jalapeños and cotija – was one of the standout regional styles in its summer roundup of top hot dogs. The feature coincided with National Hot Dog Day coverage, and editors used the list to showcase how cities put their own spin on the classic frank.
Locally, this is less revelation and more confirmation. The Arizona Republic reported that owner Aureliano Dominguez started the business with a borrowed cart around 1990, and the stand was recently voted the paper’s reader favorite for Sonoran hot dogs. Dominguez told the Republic that, for the Hispanic community, the Sonoran dog is “a link, a connection to the culture,” which goes a long way toward explaining the cart’s loyal following.
