ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Weaver Park recently underwent an $800,000 renovation. However, despite the improvements promised by the project, residents say the park is worse now than before the renovation.
On the project page for Weaver Park, several improvements to the recreation space were detailed, including:
- Upgraded tennis and pickleball courts, featuring new seating, fencing and lighting
- Resurfaced basketball court, including new goals
- Ballfield improvements, such as new lighting, dugouts, fencing, batting cage, bullpen and visitor seating and better drainage
- Increased accessibility, with a new pedestrian bridge, rerouted greenway, new walking path and repaved parking lots
- New amenities and landscaping, including a new playground, picnic tables and other landscaping improvements
However, residents said that list of upgrades was not represented in the current state of the park.
“I think the complaints now are a lack of seating, a lack of working bathrooms and a baseball field that still floods, and also is no longer built from Little League regulations,” explained Sally Grau, a concerned community member and North Asheville Little League mom. “I think that there are more issues now than there were before the renovation.”
