Real estate group warns of cost burdens for Central Texas homeowners

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Housing unaffordability is not only affecting people looking to buy homes here in Central Texas. It’s also affecting those who are already homeowners. That’s according to a new report from the Austin Board of Realtors and Unlock MLS.

The report says rising property taxes, homeowners’ insurance premiums, utility bills and maintenance costs are putting growing financial pressure on Central Texas households, even as home prices have cooled from their 2022 highs.

In the report’s Homeowner Affordability Index, it was estimated that every $100 increase in monthly housing costs pushes roughly 9,800 Central Texas households into cost-burdened status…
