New Tennessee law: Private school students could now try out for public school sports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Some Tennessee students attending private schools could soon have more opportunities to play sports.

Metro Nashville Public Schools is updating its athletics policy to comply with a new state law that allows eligible private school students to try out for public school athletic teams if their school does not offer that sport.

To qualify, students must live within the attendance zone of the public school where they want to try out. The law does not guarantee a roster spot—students must still earn a place on the team through the normal tryout process…
