On July 30, 1864, soldiers of the Union’s Third Arkansas Cavalry were in the midst of an extended scouting expedition through Yell County. The operation began July 25 and continued until August 11 as troops searched for Confederate guerrillas and gathered intelligence about enemy movements. The regiment operated from a base at Lewisburg in Conway County and conducted repeated patrols into central and western Arkansas.
The James E. M. Barkman House in Arkadelphia was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1974. Constructed about 1860, the two-story house combines Greek Revival and Gothic Revival architecture.
