‘School’s Open, Drive Carefully Tour’ stops in Columbus

The “School’s Open, Drive Carefully Tour” made a pit stop in Columbus Thursday morning July 30, 2026. For nearly eight decades, AAA has been working to promote school bus and crossing zone safety through their ‘School’s Open, Drive Carefully Tour’ held across Georgia prior to the start of the school year. Students return to school in Muscogee County Monday August 3, 2026.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Department of Public Safety and the Muscogee County School District joined AAA for their annual safety event.   AAA representatives offer safety tips for drivers, especially teens, and for students who walk or bike to school.  The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety explains when drivers have to stop for school buses that are picking up or dropping off students and the steep fine they face when they do not stop as the law requires.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division provides the annual inspection process on every school bus that operates on Georgia roads each year and explains why riding a school bus is statistically the safest way for a child to get to and from school each day…
