RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Lorelei Schmidt is getting ready to start her senior year of high school, but first she’s planning to take on a challenge that most swimmers only dream of — crossing the English Channel.
Lorelei glides through the water effortlessly. She’s been swimming since she was a toddler and started racing in elementary school, but she doesn’t limit herself to swimming pools. She took up open water swimming several years ago.
“During COVID, when all the pools shut down, I got a little stir crazy being in the house,” she said. “We went to the local lake, Falls Lake, and would get in just to swim.”…
