St. Pete Mayor Welch discusses Gas Plant District redevelopment project | Rooted in Progress

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch is joining Rooted in Progress to discuss the latest developments with the historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment Project.

Established in the late 1800s, The Gas Plant District was the second African-American neighborhood established in St. Pete. It was a thriving and bustling community filled with many Black homeowners, churches, grocery stores, movie theaters, schools, restaurants and much more.

However, it all came crumbling down when city officials referred to it as a “slum” and made way for Tropicana Field, I-375 and I-175. Thousands of people lost their homes, churches, jobs, you name it…
