TOPEKA (KSNT) – More than a dozen states have been listed in an emergency order meant to help “mitigate the risk of blackouts” during an extended stretch of summer heat.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright issued the emergency order, which is effective through Monday, August 3, on Sunday.

The order was issued following a request from Southwest Power Pool, which oversees transmission in all or parts of 17 states. The company is now allowed to send out backup generation units and adjust operations as needed “to maintain reliability,” a press release from the Energy Department explains.
