Just a short drive west of Little Rock, the Maumelle River offers one of Central Arkansas’ most peaceful paddling experiences. Flowing into Lake Maumelle beneath a canopy of cypress and hardwoods, this quiet water trail feels a world away from the bustle of the city. Whether you’re new to kayaking, looking for a relaxing afternoon on the water, or hoping to spot wildlife, the Maumelle River is an excellent destination.
More than a decade after our first visit, it remains one of our favorite places to introduce people to paddling. The scenery changes with the seasons, wildlife is abundant, and every trip reveals something a little different.
Launching at Sleepy Hollow
Our journey began at the Sleepy Hollow Recreation Area on Highway 10. The boat ramp provides convenient access to the western end of Lake Maumelle and the lower Maumelle River. Within minutes of leaving the ramp behind, the sounds of traffic disappear and are replaced by birdsong and the rhythmic splash of paddles.
The paddle from Sleepy Hollow is easy enough for beginners while still offering plenty of opportunities for exploration. Depending on water levels, paddlers can venture well upstream through narrow channels lined with towering cypress trees or simply enjoy a leisurely cruise around the quiet coves where the river meets the lake.
