A high school student who saved a girl from sexual harassment has been shot dead by a teen gunman. 15-year-old Da’Jon Hayes-Burr was found unconscious with gunshot wounds in the Shawnee neighborhood in western Louisville, Kentucky, when the police responded to a shooting incident on Saturday, July 25. He was pronounced dead after being taken to UofL Hospital, per WAVE.
The police have charged a 14-year-old teen
The police have charged a 14-year-old gunman related to the shooting incident, but the identity of the accused has been kept sealed due to his age. Hayes-Burr’s family said that they were visiting a few friends when the incident happened.
“No parent should ever have to endure this kind of pain, and no family should have to experience such a devastating loss. Da’Jon will always be remembered as a hero, a loving son, a cherished family member, and a young man whose courage will never be forgotten,” the family’s statement read, per the outlet.
Hayes-Burr sustained stab injuries when he tried to protect 12-year-old Bristyl Stasel from sexual harassment during the Thunder Over Louisville festival on April 18. As per WDRB, 45-year-old Vasilis Sakellaridis made lewd comments towards the teen girl, prompting a response from her mother, Kristyn, who accompanied her to the event.
Hayes-Burr earlier protected a girl from sexual harassment
When the mother screamed that the girl was just 12, the perpetrator responded with “never too young to have fun.” This led the mother to label the man as “paedophile,” as she screamed to attract attention from bystanders.
