BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Several new Louisiana laws take effect Aug. 1, bringing changes for consumers, student-athletes, colleges, drivers and the environment.
Here are six of the biggest changes Louisianans should know.
Debit card surcharges banned
Businesses can no longer charge customers an extra fee for paying with a debit card.
The new law prohibits debit card surcharges on purchases made in stores and online. The change is intended to protect consumers from unexpected fees at checkout. The law only applies to debit cards. Credit card surcharge rules remain unchanged.
Balloon releases banned
