Former teacher remains in custody after detention hearing in case involving CSM

A former Columbia teacher will stay in jail — pending a federal indictment on sex crimes against children — following a hearing at the Matthew J. Perry Courthouse.

Jonathan Andrew Monk will remain housed at the Sumter County Detention Center after waiving a detention hearing Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Rogers III.

Monk’s decision to waive the hearing wasn’t openly discussed by Taylor Davis Gilliam, Monk’s lawyer, in court. Monk, who’s pled not guilty, could request a new detention hearing at a later date…
