Brighton, N.Y. — A Fairlife tanker leaked waste-activated sludge Friday morning on State Route 590 southbound near Blossom Road, according to the Brighton Fire Department.
Assistant Chief Steve Schalabba said a call came in for a tanker leaking fluid with a foul odor. Firefighters found an 8,000-gallon tanker from the Fairlife facility in Webster leaking a foamy fluid.
Schalabba said the tanker leaked waste-activated sludge, some of which accumulated on side of the expressway.
“The bacteria in the sludge is currently kind of regenerating at a quicker-than-normal pace, and they do add a solution to kind of manage the foam production during these transports,” Schalabba said. “For whatever reason, today that process seems to be accelerating a little more than normal, which caused the overflow condition.”…
