JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Two Jackson city council members are at odds over whether the city’s budget needs to be amended before the end of the fiscal year, which is two months away.
The case for amending the budget
Ward 7 Councilman Kevin Parkinson is calling for a budget amendment, which he describes as a safe option for the city. The city’s chief financial officer said the state auditor’s office confirmed that governing bodies are required to bring the budget in line with what the city actually expects to bring in.
Parkinson said failure to act could result in an audit and potential personal liability for council members and department heads.
“We simply have to amend the budget, and I think to me it’s very clear that we are going to be well short of the 135 that this council projected as revenues in general funds,” Parkinson said.
