National Guard joins DC police to combat overdose spike in Northeast

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — There’s an alarming spike in opioid overdoses in D.C. this week.

First responders treated roughly 50 people within two days, so now the National Guard is helping patrol a problem spot in Northeast D.C.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) established a drug-free zone on Wednesday around Starburst Plaza and the surrounding Hechinger Mall area. It allows police to stop people from loitering and hopefully decrease the number of overdoses in the area…
