BNSF, utility settle common carrier dispute over coal deliveries

WASHINGTON — BNSF Railway and Evergy have settled a common carrier case the Kansas City, Mo.-based utility filed in 2024, alleging that the railroad refused to deliver enough Powder River Basin coal to its power plants in 2022.

BNSF and Evergy yesterday asked the Surface Transportation Board to dismiss the case. The board granted that request and in a statement today praised BNSF and Evergy for resolving the dispute. “There are significant benefits in the parties closest to matters identifying mutually agreeable solutions,” the board said.
