KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is honoring the memory of an officer following his line-of-duty death in the late 1980s.
Officer Jeffrey A. Young died on August 1, 1989, after spending nine months in a coma resulting from injuries sustained after being intentionally struck by a suspect on I-70.
The 1988 Incident
On November 10, 1988, Young and other KCKPD officers established a roadblock on Interstate 70 to assist in the apprehension of a wanted suspect. According to department records, the suspect attempted to evade the roadblock and intentionally struck Young with his vehicle.
Young suffered critical injuries and remained in a coma until his death nine months later.
