New Kansas City center provides care after violence. ‘A beacon of light for healing’

When Alvin Brooks and the founding members of Kansas City’s Ad Hoc Group Against Crime banded together to address the unsolved murders of nine African American women in 1977, they were striving for answers and justice.

What they didn’t know at the time is they had also begun the work of building a bridge.

Before a bridge can be built, workers test the strength of the soil and the rock below to see what the ground can hold. They check how the construction will affect local nature, weather patterns and traffic. And eventually, designers draw up the plans to execute…
