Vail Mountain began dismantling its 1969 red-and-yellow gondola in Lionshead in an effort to make way for a new, $12 million gondola that was scheduled to go online later that year.

“The improvement is part of a five-year plan to upgrade the western and eastern areas of the resort,” the Rocky Mountain News reported. “The new gondola will have heat, a sound system and large vistas through oversized windows.”…
