Seattle’s internet-famous raccoon Jimothy has been crowned Washingtonian of the Day by Gov. Bob Ferguson, adding a statewide title to a summer of murals, fan art and civic attention. The round-bodied animal has gone from Ballard neighborhood curiosity to one of the Pacific Northwest’s most recognizable wild creatures.
Ferguson announced the informal recognition in a social media video, saying Jimothy had captured the hearts of people across Washington and around the world, according to KEYE News. The governor praised the raccoon’s resilience while getting by and apparently thriving despite a suspected spinal deformity.
In the video, Ferguson framed Jimothy as a symbol of perseverance rather than simply another viral animal. The recognition is unofficial, but the fandom surrounding Seattle’s oddly shaped celebrity is very real.
