Monday, August 3, opens with a look back at outdoor performance history. Historian Jack McCarthy presents his book on the Mann Center for the Performing Arts and Robin Hood Dell at Parkway Central Library at 6 p.m., tracing both venues through decades of celebrated performances and shifting audience tastes.
Arts and Exhibitions in the City
On Tuesday, August 4, the Firehouse Gallery at Brandywine Workshop and Archives hosts the We the People exhibition, curated by Alicia DeLarge. The show examines the narratives and creative work of Black artists who have shaped Philadelphia’s cultural landscape. Hours run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday evening also brings a Summer Jack-O’-Lanterns Workshop at Fleisher Art Memorial (5:30 to 7:30 p.m.), where participants carve watermelons rather than pumpkins. Led by Mallory Valvano of Party Girl, the session includes a watermelon, a cake sample, and a mocktail. Tickets are $45, and a rain date is set for Wednesday, August 5.
A Colonial-Era Oyster Revival on National Oyster Day
Wednesday coincides with National Oyster Day. Carpenters’ Hall marks the occasion with its second annual Shells of Liberty Oyster Bash (5:30 to 8 p.m.). According to Billy Penn at WHYY, oysters were a staple street food in 18th-century Philadelphia, with the city operating roughly 379 oyster houses by the 1800s. Recent excavations at Carpenters’ Hall turned up shells beneath its 250-year-old floors. Tickets are $75 and include one beer and 12 oyster samples, with proceeds benefiting the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.
Free Jazz Continues in Wilmington
Running through Saturday, August 8, Wilmington’s Clifford Brown Jazz Festival at Rodney Square offers a full week of free outdoor performances. WHYY reports the festival launched in 1989 as a small gathering and has grown into the largest free jazz festival on the East Coast. This year’s lineup includes Jonathan Butler, Ledisi, Marcus Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Sheila E. and the E Train, and The Baylor Project. No tickets required.
