LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Kentucky household members can apply from Tuesday through Sept. 11 for a federal summer cooling program that helps keep homes safe and cool while easing the strain caused by electricity bills.

Applications opened on Aug. 3 for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)’s Summer Subsidy Cooling Component. According to a news release from Kentucky Community Action Partnerships, all 120 counties have offices that can help residents apply for the one-time utility benefit.
Who can apply for the Summer Subsidy Cooling Component?
Kentucky community action officials said that to apply for the one-time benefit, all applicants are required to have a household income of up to and including 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Applicants also need to provide proof of citizenship, including a Social Security card or Permanent Resident Card, as well as the most current electric bill, a statement from your landlord if electric is included in your rent, or a statement from the utility company if you participate in a pre-paid electric program.

Agency representatives said that qualifying households had at least one member with a health condition or disability that requires cooling to prevent further deterioration, as verified by a physician statement; had a member 65 years or older; or had a member younger than age six.
Community Action Kentucky noted that the Summer Subsidy did not require a disconnect notice, a past-due bill, or an eviction notice.
“The Subsidy benefit may be applied as a credit to the household’s account,” officials wrote. “Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect household eligibility.”…
