ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – For the past 20 years, The Dome has served as a hub for sports, youth camps and year-round indoor recreation in a region where outdoor activity is limited by climate.
The next 20 years are less certain. The nonprofit still needs more than $1 million to complete a critical project, one that would keep the facility open and its roof inflated.
What makes The Dome a dome is the giant fabric shell that is secured by concrete and supported by air 24/7, keeping it inflated. Those shells last about 20-25 years. With The Dome first inflating in 2007, the current shell is due for a replacement next summer…
