A death investigator took to LadBible’s honesty box to break open the taboo around death and answer some of the most intriguing questions about her job and what it’s like to be in the end of life industry.
Barbara Butcher revealed she’d investigated some truly gruesome crimes, accidental deaths, heartbreaking cases involving children and even helped investigations on 9/11. But, when asked what the “worst way to die was,” the death investigator had a surprising answer that didn’t involve any violence.
She worked as a death investigator for New York City’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner for over 20 years, investigating more than 5,500 deaths. Barbara explained that death investigators are a little-known role at the scene of a death that works to figure out how the person died. She explained: “We look around at the entire scene of a crime or any death for that matter.

“We get a sense for how this person lived, because how you live often determines how you die…The scene belongs to the police, the body belongs to me…
