WASHINGTON (7News) — Metro leaders say crime has fallen to historically low levels on the transit system, but there are still some types of crime transit police are struggling to bring down.
The most notable drop is for violent crimes. Recently reported crime numbers show that, as of the end of June, aggravated assaults had fallen 19% compared to the same time in 2025, and robberies had fallen 36%.
Metro credits a crackdown on fare evasion with helping to reduce numbers for more serious crimes. At a press conference Tuesday, officials with the transit agency said in Fiscal Year 2023 (July 2022-June 2023), transit police only gave out seven tickets for bus fare evasion the entire year.
