Local pastor leaves troubled past behind to help community

As a young man, Raul Maysonet found himself bouncing between penitentiaries up and down the west coast of the United States. He seemed destined to spend the rest of his life like this, but 20 years ago, he turned to God, which he said changed his life.

Today, Maysonet is a prolific community leader, serving as CEO and pastor at the Battle Creek-based Hood Church, managing the Hope House Aftercare facility and helping to organize a monthly food giveaway for the homeless in the area. Maysonet said his professional life is centered around giving back and improving lives.

Maysonet was born in New Jersey to Puerto Rican parents. The family moved back to the island soon after his birth. In 1979, when he was 9, he and his mother found their way to Los Angeles…
