STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Just weeks after embarking on a journey across Texas in a solar-powered vehicle they spent months designing and building, Staten Island’s Seagull Solar team has returned home with two major national honors.
The Staten Island Solar Car Team — a collaboration between students and faculty at Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School and Staten Island Technical High School — earned second place in the Classic Division of the 2026 Solar Car Challenge, finishing the five-day competition with 459.1 scored miles.
