ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Gov. JB Pritzker has proclaimed August as No-Kill Shelter Month in Illinois, marking the first time the state has issued this official recognition.
Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, in Rockford, has operated for decades in the Stateline area, providing care for more than 1,000 animals in its shelter each year and serving between 3,000 and 4,000 animals through its clinic. No-kill shelters help healthy and treatable animals, looking to save 90 percent of the animals that come to the shelter.
Stephanie Lauer, Executive Director of Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, explained that being a no-kill facility does not mean an organization never utilizes euthanasia. “There is something called behavioral euthanasia,” Lauer said. “Dogs that are aggressive that really should not be placed out. You’ve tried to work with them, you’ve tried to train them, and they are still a danger to the community. You don’t want to put an animal like that out in public.”…
