Amarillo never seems to have enough coffee shops, churches, and convenience stores. Amarillo has been lucky to have a locally owned convenience store that spans the Texas Panhandle and parts of West Texas. If you’re like me, you grew up on Pak-A-Sak. However, things with our beloved Pak-A-Sak may soon be changing.
I grew up in Hereford, and Pak-A-Sak has been a fixture in my memories for as long as I can remember, especially the store on the corner of Park Ave. and 25 Mile Ave. Then, when I went to WTAMU for college, there was one just around the corner from my apartment. They always had the best fountain drinks, and it was our go-to spot. Unless you wanted an Allsup’s burrito. Then you’d grab your burrito at Allsup’s and head to Pak-A-Sak for your drink. That pretty much sums up growing up in the Texas Panhandle.
A Texas Panhandle Legacy Since 1978
Dale and Joyce McKee opened the first Pak-A-Sak in Canyon in 1978. If you follow Pak-A-Sak’s social media, you will see the anniversary dates of all the stores being shared all the time. They didn’t just build a convenience store. They built a hometown brand that feels like family, one that many generations of Texas Panhandle folks have grown up on.
They are a part of Texas Panhandle history.
What Do We Know About the Pak-A-Sak Sale?
If you have been on social media at all in the last day, then you have probably seen that Pak-A-Sak is being sold to Casey’s General Store. We did reach out to Pak-A-Sak, and here’s what we know right now.
- Pak-A-Sak has entered an agreement to sell.
- The transaction has not closed.
- A Pak-A-Sak representative confirmed the deal is still in the option period.
- Current operations are expected to continue for now.
- Employees are continuing business as usual.
For three generations, Pak-A-Sak has been more than a business to our family—it has been our life’s work. We have grown from a single location into a staple of the Texas Panhandle, and that success is due entirely to the dedication, hard work, and heart of our employees. Because we care deeply about the future of this company we have decided to enter into an agreement to sell Pak-A-Sak to Casey’s General Stores. We are confident in selecting Casey’s for this next chapter as they hold the same values we hold dear—community service, quality, and a family-friendly environment. We are in the early stages of this transition and at this time nothing changes in our day-to-day operations. We appreciate our team continuing to do what they do best – serving our guests and communities.
Casey’s Confirms Deal to Acquire 24 Pak-A-Sak Stores
We reached out to Casey’s, and here is what they shared with us:
- Casey’s, the third largest convenience chain, has entered into an agreement to acquire 24 Pak-A-Sak stores in northern Texas.
- These high-quality locations are primarily in the Amarillo area and will add to the company’s growing number of units in the state.
- We look forward to the next steps in this transaction and welcoming the employees at these locations to the Casey’s family.
