WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A man from South Carolina was sentenced on Friday to 18 and a half years in prison for shooting and killing a man and injuring a college student outside Air Nightclub in 2022.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia said that 28-year-old Jakiem Miller pleaded guilty on May 6 to one count of voluntary manslaughter while armed and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon after a mistrial in Feb. 2026 because of an attorney’s hospitalization.

On Dec. 17, 2022, shortly after midnight, management at the nightclub asked 30-year-old Avon Perkins to leave the club, evidence stated. Perkins was waiting outside for his friend when Miller walked over to him. The USAO said that after a “brief discussion,” Perkins punched Miller in the face.
