In a surprising twist during Thursday’s game at Truist Park, the Miami Marlins’ outfielders turned what should have been a routine play into an unexpected gift for the Atlanta Braves.
Typically, an outfield assist is recorded when an outfielder throws out a baserunner trying to advance. But in the bottom of the third inning of the Braves’ 11-3 victory, Marlins left fielder Heriberto Hernández and center fielder Esteury Ruiz failed to communicate on a deep fly ball hit by Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., resulting in a bizarre collision and a costly error.
Acuña Jr. crushed a 79-mph pitch from Marlins starter Janson Junk toward left-center field. The ball was destined to stay in play, but Hernández and Ruiz both claimed the catch, unaware of each other amid the crowd noise. Their collision on the warning track knocked the ball over the fence, turning what looked like a catch into a two-run home run.
Both players were left scrambling on the ground, realizing too late that their collision had allowed the ball to clear the wall. Acuña initially hesitated at first base, unsure if the ball had gone out, but then confidently rounded the bases.
Ruiz explained the miscommunication after the game, noting that the noise prevented them from hearing each other call for the ball. “When I saw the ball, I thought it was leaving the ballpark,” he said through an interpreter.
“While I was running, I noticed it was going to stay on the field. I said, ‘I got it,’ and you can see in the video that (Hernández) also said, ‘I got it.’
But we couldn’t hear each other with the noise of the ballpark.”
Acuña wasn’t done there – he added a solo homer over the right-field wall in the eighth inning, helping the Braves extend their lead to 9-2. Reflecting on his two homers, Acuña quipped that the first one “told me I needed help,” while Braves first baseman Matt Olson joked that Acuña “had a little angel on his shoulder tonight.”
The Braves’ win marked their eighth consecutive victory, further extending their lead in the National League East. They are set to continue their streak Friday against the New York Yankees, while the Marlins look to rebound facing the Los Angeles Angels.
