Reminder to Modesto drivers: Many school zones have dropped from 25 to 15 mph

What have Modesto road workers been doing over the summer break for schools? Installing 15 mph speed limit signs near many campuses.

The change from 25 mph was approved by the City Council on June 23 and took effect 30 days later. The limit is enforced when children are present, including activities leading up to the Aug. 10 start of the academic year for Modesto City Schools.

Under the state law on how local governments set speed limits, the change applies only to two-lane streets. Also under state law, before a speed limit can be changed, a traffic expert must survey current driver behavior…
