Some Allen Co. districts’ bus driver staffing better than others heading into new school year

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — Some Allen County school districts said the first few weeks of school will present transportation challenges, while others have more of a staffing cushion.

Southwest Allen and Northwest Allen County Schools both resumed classes for the next school year on Wednesday. Southwest Allen’s transportation director, Michael Martin, said some drivers are still going through training. But once that is completed, the district will be in good shape. He said in the next few weeks, some buses may be more crowded than normal. But those routes should return to normal soon.

Northwest Allen County Schools’ assistant director of transportation, Greg Krempel, said his district is down a few drivers going into this school year. The district also has a number of drivers still going through training.

“I know there’s other districts that are struggling with that as well,” Krempel said. “We’re getting there, but we’re always looking for qualified people to come down and apply to be a driver.”…
