Ridge Fire explodes to 1,000 acres; Grapevine traffic halted on 5 Freeway

The Ridge Fire burning near Gorman has exploded to 1,000 acres as traffic remains shut down on both sides of the 5 Freeway, causing a traffic jam through the Grapevine.

The fire ignited shortly before 2:45 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The fire started near the 39000 block of Gorman Post Road and quickly spread along the dry hillside on the outskirts of Los Angeles County.

The fire was initially deemed 100 acres in size and was burning only on the east side of the 5 Freeway. However, the flames have since jumped the freeway and the fire is now spreading through the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area.
