Rain brings relief to Virginia drought, but dry conditions persist

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia’s historic drought is showing signs of improvement after recent rainfall, but state officials say more precipitation is still needed.

The latest drought update from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality shows the areas experiencing extreme drought saw the biggest improvements. Those regions declined from 8% last week to 4% this week.

The improvement also prompted Richmond and several neighboring localities to lift voluntary water-conservation measures that had been in place for more than a month, citing rising water levels in the James River…
