In memory of their granddaughter, Staten Island family turns heartbreak into hope at car show

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Stacy Lorenzo gets emotional when she talks about her granddaughter. Skylar Milagros Fonseca died in 2013, just eight hours after she was born.

“In those short eight hours, she changed my perspective,” Lorenzo said. “Although I wanted to take the bull by the horns and fix everything myself, I had to open my eyes and realize that I couldn’t. That it was bigger than me.”

Lorenzo’s daughter, Brianna Lorenzo, was 20 weeks pregnant when a scan revealed that her baby had a rare condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or CDH. The condition occurs in approximately one in every 2,500 to 4,000 live births worldwide…
