Residents of the five boroughs face dangerously high heat index values Saturday, with scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms possible Saturday afternoon and evening.
Heat and humidity
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Staten Island valid through 8 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters noted the heat advisory was expanded Saturday morning to cover a broader area after determining that warmer temperature guidance was more reliable than one model that came in lower. Heat index values are expected to reach or exceed 95 degrees across much of the area.
Hot conditions are forecast to continue Sunday, with surface temperatures and humidity levels keeping heat index values near the 95-degree advisory threshold for much of the region. The National Weather Service indicated that an extension of the advisory into Sunday remains possible but has not yet been issued, as forecast data remains marginal.
Storm threat
Scattered to isolated thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon and evening. Forecasters noted the potential for wet microbursts and at least isolated severe weather. Any thunderstorms that develop could produce brief periods of reduced visibility and gusty winds. Southwest to west-southwest winds Saturday afternoon are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph, with occasional gusts up to around 20 mph, diminishing to under 10 mph Saturday night.
Extended forecast
Conditions become somewhat less oppressive Monday and Tuesday as a boundary pushes south of the area and high pressure builds in, lowering humidity levels. Temperatures are still expected to reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees on those days.
