On most early mornings along Ocean Beach, visitors are few and far between. The thick fog and biting wet-cold can scare off even the bravest San Franciscans. But buried in the sea foam in knee high waders, some lone anglers and crabbers stand out like black specks in a sea of gray, like a marble-granite countertop.
Historically, this hobby’s demographic has mostly been associated with old men, catching crabs for a cheap seafood dinner. Standing at 5-foot-3, 28-year-old Kaitlyn Bui is an outlier. Bundled in layers, the city native sets up her Hello Kitty snare trap, a small metal cage she stuffs with frozen mackerel and squid. Casting out her line, she’s able to catch four rock crabs on a single snare.
