There are now more than 700 new-and-improved ways to cross the street across the Lowcountry.
The S.C. Department of Transportation on Aug. 7 celebrated the completion of hundreds of new crosswalks in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Jasper counties. The project began in 2019 and wrapped up this year. Rob Perry, SCDOT’S deputy secretary for engineering, said the project aims to reduce traffic-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities by providing safe crossings.
“You should have a safe way to get to work, to get to the grocery store, to get to that park,” Perry said. “Adding these crosswalks is just another way of doing that.”…
