Bhupinder Kumar, known to friends as Bobby, was 31 years old when he was stabbed multiple times in the chest in the parking lot of Muggs Night Club in Castro Valley in the early hours of Saturday, August 8, 1998. Nearly 28 years later, no one has ever been arrested or charged, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office says the case remains open.
The sheriff’s office revived the case publicly this weekend, posting a detailed account of the killing under case number 98-020608, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say Kumar and the suspect exchanged words in the parking lot before the suspect briefly walked away with a woman, then returned less than a minute later and got into a physical altercation with Kumar that ended in the fatal stabbing.
Witnesses described the attacker as a Hispanic man standing between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 150 to 170 pounds. According to the sheriff’s office account, the suspect was picked up afterward by a Black woman driving a dark-colored SUV-type vehicle that fled the scene in an unknown direction.
