MUSC opens expanded downtown Columbia ER, continues other Midlands projects

Charleston-based MUSC Health has opened an expanded Emergency Department in its downtown Columbia hospital on Forest Drive. Formerly Providence Hospital, MUSC purchased the facility in 2021, and in 2024 announced a major expansion of its emergency department the health system said would double the ER’s capacity.

That project is now almost complete. Hospital leaders and local dignitaries held a ribbon-cutting for the new emergency facilities July 30, marking the opening of the expanded ER and the end of the second phase of a $30 million project, according to a news release from the health system.
