COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A possible lightning strike caused a fire which engulfed the roof of a church in west Columbus early Monday morning.
According to the Columbus Division of Fire, at around 3:50 a.m. units were called to the Cherry Creek Church on Sullivant Avenue, where multiple crews and nearly a dozen fire engines and nearly 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival the CDF said it was met with flames approaching 30-to-40 feet in height and a massive amount of smoke.

Crews were reportedly initially defensive in their approach as they could not enter the building for fear that the roof could collapse, and eventually one side of the roof did cave in.
