FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Contaminants and debris are being hauled out of the North River site starting Monday, a crucial step before the property is developed into what is expected to be a massive economic boost for the Summit City.
Trucks will be removing soil scattered across the site from prior industrial use, according to the latest update from the City of Fort Wayne. The city noted there is no danger to residents as the remediation takes place across the 29-acre district, which sits just north of the St. Marys River between Clinton, Harrison and Fourth streets.
The entire project could take years. The city said in the release its redevelopment department has contracted with environmental consulting firm IWM Consulting to lead this first phase of the work, which is expected to last six months.
“It’s exciting to see this work beginning,” said Redevelopment Director Alec Johnson. “This highly visible property in the heart of our city has been blighted for decades and now we are taking significant steps to make it a safe, vibrant asset for the neighborhood and our community.”
