BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Officials in Calhoun County are inviting the community to join them in a ceremony where the county’s justice center will officially be rededicated in honor of a nationally recognized trailblazer in Michigan’s judicial system.
The facility, formerly the Calhoun County Justice Center, is being renamed after Mary S. Coleman. In 1972, Coleman was the first woman to be elected to the Michigan Supreme Court and in 1979 was the first woman to serve as chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.

Officials said Coleman started her legal career in Marshall and served the county as a probate and juvenile judge, focusing much of her work on children, families, and the fair administration of justice.
